What is Venous Insufficiency?

Venous Insufficiency is when the veins, mostly of the lower legs, do not work like they should.  The valves in the veins go bad which leads to blood pooling in the legs.  This leads to swelling, discoloration of the skin (hemosiderin deposition), thickening of the skin, varicose veins, pain, itching, burning, and restless legs.  We offer Closurefast (Radiofrequency Endovenous Ablation), Venaseal (endovenous glue), and Sclerotherapy (Chemical ablation).

Ready to show off your legs?

Vein issues need to be evaluated thoroughly to evaluate where the problem is actually located.  The varicosities are usually a result of the incompetent superficial vein.  If the varicosities are treated without treating the real problem underneath, they are likely to recur soon.   Spider Veins can also recur if the underlying veins are not addressed.

How are they Diagnosed?

Veins are evaluated with a Duplex Ultrasound evaluation.  Once the problem veins are identified, then a treatment plan can be rendered.  Once the plan of treatment is agreed upon, preparation for treatment can begin.

Do I have to wear compression stockings?

Almost all Insurance companies require all patients with vein issues to undergo a 3 month conservative trial before they will pay for vein treatments.  Conservative trials include Compression stockings of 20 – 30 mm strength, routine elevation, NSAID medications (Ibuprofen) regularly for pain, and exercise – such as walking, swimming, or cycling.  They also want to see interruption of our Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) – such as having to stop your routine and elevate due to pain or swelling, or your spouse having to take over some of the household chores that you used to do.
